Criteria setting with data collection and information design to accompany decision making in the redevelopment of University campus areas.

Istanbul University is a networked campus but founded and mainly situated in suriçi peninsula. The eldest of the nation’s universities, its headquarters have been the site of many political scenes in the past and today is still a hotspot, in the midst of a high touristic traffic. The two hospital campuses of the university however are situated further west, and have attracted the most successful medical students in the country for decades. The buildings are eclectic, especially the site of Capa is chaotic for both the personnel and the patients. Today there is also spoken threat of earthquake, and the need for technological and functional renovation. It is a challenge to overcome certain misunderstandings and fake ideals of urbanization like those that shoveled major services outside the city in the early 90’s, or the thrust of touristic investments that level out urban vitality. Yet another challenge is to activate the thousands of employers and students into thinking on the issue and connect them in a synthetic action that will affect their lives. Finally the challenge is to formulate such a project in the bureacratic environment and political context taking financial incentives and social considerations. Tuspa’s work consists of information design in a short period of 3 weeks. Major goal was to specify criteria for the decision making process regarding the sites future. Comissioned by the rectorate of the university I worked with Emrah Kavlak, info designer. We were accompanied with a group of university members brought together to accumulate data directed by the university hospitals coordinator and the meetings were supervised by vice rector. The outcome of the work is shared with the Government Planning Office. The project is mainly negotiated on its financial strategies but is also strongly tied to the future of public health investments and policies of Ministry of Health.
